Ladies and Gentlemen, yesterday we remembered and condemned the 50th anniversary of the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey. 50 years ago, Turkish forces launched an unprovoked attack on this beautiful island, bringing with them a wave of terror and destruction that would leave an indelible scar on its people. The invasion resulted in the brutal displacement of hundreds of thousands of the indigence Cypriots from their ancestral home. Families were torn apart, livelihoods destroyed, and communities shattered. These displaced individuals have never been able to return living as refugees within their own homeland.
Nearly 40% of Cyprus remains under illegal occupation, a stark reminder of the aggression that tore this nation apart. Nicosia stands as the world's only divided capital, a poignant symbol of the enduring division and suffering inflicted upon the Cypriot people. The atrocities committed during this invasion were nothing short of crimes against humanity. Innocent civilians were murdered, women were raped, and entire villages were razed to the ground. These heinous acts were driven by a policy of ethnic cleansing, aiming to change the demographic composition of the island through sheer brutality.
Turkey justified this invasion with the same colonialist mindset that characterized the Ottoman Empire. Cloaked in the guise of protecting minority rights, this act of aggression was in reality a continuation of a long history of imperial dominance and oppression. It was the war of terror, designed to impose Turkish control throughout fear and violence.
As Jews, but especially as Israelis, we know all too well of the pain and suffering that aggressive and violent radical Islamist dictator can inflict while attacking an innocent civilian population. For generations, we have suffered the same, that is why we have to stand in Solidarity with the people of Cyprus, and commemorate the atrocity and violence that was committed against them 50 years ago.
We, the indigenous people of the Land of Israel, have suffered the violence and hatred of the Ottoman Empire as so many others. As we gather here today, let us honor the memory of those who suffered and those who continue to endure the pain of this invasion. We stand united in our condemnation of these atrocities and in our call for justice and reunification of Cyprus. May their suffering never be forgotten, and may peace and justice prevail. Thank you.
